After doing this reading I have realized how important visual literacy is in this day and age of the internet. Having grown up with the internet I feel like I have developed visual literacy naturally and it is something that we all do subconsciously to an extent. It is really interesting to think about how we can further develop our visual literacy by making a conscious effort to look for specific things in visuals. I think the main part of visual literacy now is the knowledge of visual conventions. With so many brands we as a society have prescribed meaning to specific symbols that are universally known. We have been doing this long before brands with symbols like arrows and hexagons for stop signs. I think now more than ever though it is a critical way in which we see and interpret the world. The reading also talks about how education needs to adapt to educate students about this fast changing digital world that we live in. I think this is really important because younger people need guidance in how to navigate the digital world and be taught how to think deeply and critically about the space. There is so much information thrown at us every day that it can be hard to decipher and analyze it with visual literacy. I think it is important for young people to become visually literate early on so that they can navigate their way through the digital world better and contribute critical ideas to the world as they grow their visual literacy and get older.
